Sharapova rolls into third round of Madrid Open
Maria Sharapova continued her recovery at the Madrid Open with a comfortable straight-sets win over Mariana Duque-Marino in the second round Tuesday. The world No. 3 has suffered surprise defeats in Miami and Stuttgart in recent months but appears to have found her game in the Spanish capital. She defeated Duque-Marino 6-1, 6-2. Sharapova, the defending champion, needed 75 minutes to book a third-round clash with Caroline Garcia. She dominated the match, with her forehand proving a particularly useful weapon. Garcia caused one of the upsets on Tuesday as she dumped 14th seed Karolina Pliskova. The world No. 28 produced some stunning shots in the decider to win 6-2, 4-6, 6-1. Pliskova was not the only seed to fall. Sara Errani came unstuck against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who rallied from a set down to win 3-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-4.
