MLB Nightly 9: Orioles win on 'Re-Opening Day'; Nationals stay hot

Each night we'll provide you with the nine top story lines from the day's action, beginning with the stars of the day, and look ahead to the next day's matchups.

With Baltimore fans referring to it as "Re-Opening Day", the Orioles beat the Blue Jays Monday night in their first home game since April 29.

The Orioles had two games versus the White Sox postponed at the end of April before playing to an empty stadium on April 29 because of civil unrest in the city following the death of Freddie Gray. Baltimore then played a scheduled home series against the Rays in St. Petersburg, Fla.

On Monday, the Orioles wore special white jerseys with "Baltimore" on the front just for the occasion. The 5-2 victory was the first time since April 25 the Orioles played a game in front of their home fans. After that, 15 of their next 18 games will be inside Orioles Park at Camden Yards.

The Nationals stayed hot in the desert, blasting their way to an 11-1 win over the Diamondbacks for their fifth straight win and eighth in their last nine.

Elsewhere, there was plenty of offense at both Tropicana Field and Miller Park with the Yankees and Brewers both scoring double digits in their respective wins over the Rays and White Sox. Milwaukee center fielder Carlos Gomez showed no ill effects from his hip injury. He returned after three games to slam a two-run homer in the first inning, then legged out a triple and scored on the same play following a throwing error to complete the Little League home run.

Here are more highlights from Monday's games:

C — Geovany Soto, White Sox: Soto went 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs in Chicago's 10-7 loss to the Brewers.

1B — Mark Teixeira, Yankees: Teixeira had quite the night in New York's 11-5 spanking of the Rays. He went 4 for 5 with a double and two-run homer in the ninth.

2B — Thomas Field, Rangers: He blasted his first homer of the season on a 2-for-3 night while the Rangers hit a total of three homers in an 8-2 win over the Royals.

SS — Hector Gomez, Brewers: Milwaukee's other Gomez went 2 for 4 with a double, RBI and run scored in a 10-7 win over the White Sox.

3B — Yunal Escobar, Nationals: Escobar was perfect at the dish, slapping five singles with an RBI and two runs scored in Washington's 11-1 victory over the host Diamondbacks.

OF — Scott Van Slyke, Dodgers: The Dodgers left fielder went 3 for 4 with a double and a walk-off three-run homer in LA's 5-3 win over the Marlins. Van Slyke also threw out Christian Yelich at home in the seventh.

DH — Logan Forsythe, Rays: In a losing effort, Forsythe provided almost all of the offense for Tampa by going 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs.

SP— Ubaldo Jimenez, Orioles: Jimenez went seven strong innings, allowing two runs while scattering six hits and striking out nine.

The Cardinals will get third baseman Matt Carpenter back on Tuesday, general manager John Mozeliak confirmed Monday. Carpenter missed the weekend series in Pittsburgh while recovering from "extreme fatigue" and will join the team for its series against the Indians.

Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig had an MRI on his strained left hamstring Monday after suffering a setback with his injury Friday in a minor league rehab game.

Good: Chicago's Adam Eaton did not have a single RBI in his first 100 at-bats this season. Then he drove in a pair of runs Monday night against Milwaukee, including the game-tying run in the eighth inning as part of a 4-for-5 night.

Bad: Royals pitcher Danny Duffy lasted just 3 2/3 innings Monday. He gave up six runs on five hits and walked six batters while recording only four strikeouts in Kansas City's 8-2 loss to the Rangers.

A Rangers fan in Arlington snagged a foul ball with his cap.

Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro with a nice diving grab against the Mets.

Marlins shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria made a heckuva throw to beat Joc Pederson.

This will be the answer to a trivia question some day. Who was the first player to hit a home run into Wrigley Field's brand new bleacher seats? Rookie phenom Kris Bryant.

Milwaukee's Carlos Gomez likes hitting cleanup: "I feel sexy hitting. It's a different feeling. I go to the plate like, 'I'm the man'."

Pittsburgh dropped outfielder Starling Marte from the leadoff spot to fourth and he's cleaned up. Marte hit a three-run homer to help the Pirates beat the Phillies on Monday night.

"I do feel very comfortable where I am now," Marte said. "I'm more focused. More chance to drive in runs. I'm very comfortable there."

Wrigley Field once again has outfield bleachers and Bryant and first baseman Anthony Rizzo hit back-to-back there Monday.

"I'm sure everyone's excited about that," Rizzo said of the homers. "We talk about it. It's really nice for him to get that monkey off his back here at Wrigley."

The Astros promoted top prospect Carlos Correa from Double-A Corpus Christi to Triple-A Fresno, but he will likely be called up to the big leagues with shortstop Jed Lowrie out until at least the All-Star break with a thumb injury.

The Rangers sent infielder Rougned Odor to Triple-A Round Rock on Monday and called up infielder Thomas Field. Odor was hitting .144 with a .252 OBP and a .233 slugging percentage.

The A's optioned pitcher Chris Bassitt to Triple-A Nashville to clear a roster spot for righthander Edward Mujica.

Cuban infielder Hector Olivera is expected to join the Dodgers as soon as Friday.

The Phillies optioned third baseman Cody Asche Triple-A Lehigh Valley to play left field, which should open things up for Maikel Franco at the hot corner. Asche went 2 for 4 while playing third Monday night in a 4-3 loss to Pittsburgh.

When you hit six home runs in the span of three games, you're a pretty easy selection for league player of the week, which is what the National League awarded National outfielder Bryce Harper. Harper's six homers last week against the Marlins and Braves helped the Nats go 5-1 during the week. Harper also led the majors with a 1.318 slugging percentage, 13 RBIs and 29 total bases last week.

Gibson takes a 17-inning scoreless streak into the game.

Syndergaard had a 1.82 ERA with 34 strikeouts in five starts with Las Vegas. One of the more anticipated matchups will be when Chicago's own rookie phenom, Kris Bryant, steps to the plate to face Syndergaard.
