Broncos lose third-round pick Jeff Heuerman for season

A day after Jaguars rookie Dante Fowler was lost for the year with a torn ACL, Broncos rookie tight end Jeff Heuerman suffered the same fate.

Denver's third-round pick was injured during a Saturday afternoon session of rookie minicamp and will miss the 2015 season.

Heuerman suffered the injury during a special teams period. He was running down the middle of the field when he made a cut and his knee gave way, according to the Broncos.

While Heuerman may not have been the frontrunner to replace departed starter Julius Thomas, the former Ohio State tight end was still expected to compete for playing time with the newly-acquired Owen Daniels and others.

"I feel terrible for Jeff and this is a very unfortunate situation," coach Gary Kubiak said, per DenverBroncos.com. "Jeff was going to be a big part of our team this year, and he's still going to be a big part of our team and organization in the future.

"He'll get well and be with us as part of this team throughout his rehabilitation."
